Labour introduce new allowances (for themselves)

by Graham Neale on 25 May, 2011

Last night at the Town hall in Peckham, Labour made two things clear:
1. They control the budget:
They voted  three of their councillors brand new posts of ‘Deputy Cabinet Members’
(Hands up for a hand-out)
It’s £2,700 a year each – about nine grand  in total – the Labour finance spokesman described this as ‘peanuts’.
It’s enough to pay to fit new toilets  throughout Wessex House on the Old Kent Road, or Stansfeld House on the Longfield Estate, or Pope House on the Manor Estate,
or Donkin, Barlow and Barry on The Galleywall Estate.
I don’t mind councilors getting an allowance – I get about £10k a year before tax, but I’ve got an issue with creating new paid posts when they’re making cuts.
Does it just turn people off from voting ?
2. They don’t know Bermondsey:
One of the newer Labour councillors told us that the areas represented by Liberals were wealthier than the wards in Peckham.
That’s quite a scarey prospect for those of us living in the north of the borough.
They control the budget, and think we are all well off in the north . . . . .
