The Heygate Estate – what does it mean to you?

by Graham Neale on 10 February, 2013

The Heygate Estate may seem like
a million miles from South Bermondsey.

A 15 minute bus ride from the Old Kent Road,
The Heygate Estate was once home
to over a thousand Council tenants.

A secret document was made public last week
(by mistake).

According to the document,
the whole estate was sold by
Southwark Council for £50million!

If the flats are worth about £150 thousand each:
The 1,200 flats were sold at about
70% of their value
along with  22 acres of prime ‘real estate’.

The buyers,
Lend-Lease will build private flats on the site.

Some ‘affordable’ flats will be built,

but if you’re on of the thousands of people
on Southwark’s housing waiting list:

Don’t hold your breath!

Of the first 250 flats planning to be built on the site,
9 are at council rent prices.
